South Point

The colors on this picture are correct! This is Green Sand Beach the South Point of the Big Island. The green sand is formed from an olivine formation created by an ancient volcanic eruption, and as the waves erode the olivine, the resulting sand washes up on the beach. Here Kelli gets surprised by a wave.

Here's a view of Green Sand Beach, and the bay. The waves can get a little rough here. Note the guy in the red trunks; he lost his trunks a few minutes later to a particular large wave! Fortunately, we DIDN'T get a picture of that!

While we explored the volcano and South Point, we stayed at the Hobbit House. This was a unique bed and breakfast on the side of a mountain. From here, we had a great view of South Point and the Pacific Ocean.

Getting to the Hobbit House was interesting. It requires a four wheel drive vehicle; here's the road!

If you thought the road was rough, check out the driveway! Good thing we had a jeep! (It was purely a coincedence that the Jeep was Husker Red!)

Bill and Darlene Whaling are the owners of the Hobbit House. Bill has designed a new way to crack macademia nuts. It allows macademia nuts to be packaged fresh!
